Eating on Holy Island

Holyhead’s dining map has a simple rule: the good tables follow the water. The town centre covers cafes, pubs and takeaways honestly, but the meals people cross the island for sit on the seafronts — Newry Beach in town, Trearddur Bay two miles south, and Rhoscolyn beyond.

The Harbourfront Bistro is the town’s standout — right on Newry Beach with harbour views, cooking modern British food on fresh local ingredients; the natural choice before a ferry or after the breakwater walk.

Trearddur Bay & Rhoscolyn

At Trearddur, the Sea Shanty Cafe is a phenomenon — an all-day, all-comers seaside brasserie whose queues are their own recommendation. The Inn at the Bay does generous pub cooking (the three-cheese-and-onion pie has a following; mains around £15) with a beer garden across from the sea, the Driftwood covers bar-and-grill duties, and the Trearddur Bay Hotel adds hotel dining with bay windows. At Rhoscolyn, the White Eagle is the polished dining pub of the area — terrace views to the mountains, serious kitchen, book ahead.

Summer weekends stretch every kitchen on the island — book anywhere that takes bookings, or eat early. Fish and chips eaten on Newry Beach’s prom is the budget classic; the cafes guide covers daytime, and ferry travellers with an evening sailing should note the Harbourfront and the Boathouse’s bar sit ten minutes from check-in. For a bigger night out, Menai Bridge’s food scene is 30 minutes down the A55.
