Market Street, Holyhead

Holyhead’s town pubs are honest locals — ferry-crew-and-regulars houses around Market Street and the harbour where the beer is fair and the talk is real; wander and take your pick. For a pint with a view, the Boathouse Hotel’s bar on Newry Beach is the town’s best-placed glass — harbour in front, mountain behind, food served.

The Island’s Dining Pubs

The destination pubs sit out of town. The Inn at the Bay at Trearddur is the all-rounder — proper pub grub, local fish and chips, and a beer garden across the road from the sea that fills the moment the sun appears. The Driftwood nearby runs sportier and later. And the White Eagle at Rhoscolyn is the special-occasion pub — polished cooking and a terrace with mountain views; book on any sunny weekend.

Practicalities

Dogs do well here — bar areas and gardens at the island pubs are generally welcoming (see Dog Friendly). Ferry travellers should mind the clock and the drink-drive obvious; foot passengers have no such worries, and the Boathouse-to-terminal walk is ten minutes. Sunday lunch at the White Eagle or the Inn at the Bay books out — plan ahead.

A Pint with a Crossing

Holyhead’s pub culture is a port’s pub culture: shift patterns, sailing delays and homecomings have kept the town’s bars honest and unhurried for two centuries — this is where crews, crossings and characters have always washed up. Foot passengers with an evening boat have the best of it: a proper pint at the Boathouse, ten minutes’ level walk to check-in, and the ship’s bar for afters. Designated drivers get the island’s reliably good coffee and the same views free.
