Trearddur Bay is the family HQ — safe Blue Flag sand, rockpools on the arms of the bay, ice cream in the village and the RNLI station for hero-spotting. Porth Dafarch scales it down into a perfect pocket cove; Borthwen at Rhoscolyn rewards the adventurous with sheltered paddling inside its islets.

Birds, Parks & Easy Wins

Ellin’s Tower at South Stack turns birdwatching into television — telescopes and live nest-cams, with puffins the star turn April–July (the 400 lighthouse steps suit older children with steady legs). Breakwater Country Park combines playground, ponds, trails and café in one free, pushchair-friendly package, and Newry Beach’s prom-and-play-area is the in-town standby.

Wet Days & Ferry Waits

Rain: the Maritime Museum’s shipwrecks and air-raid shelter (seasonal), the Ucheldre’s family film screenings, the leisure centre’s pool — full plan in the rain guide. Killing pre-ferry time with children: country park, prom, chips — in that order. And Outdoor Active turns teenagers loose on kayaks, crags and coasteering.

A Tested Family Day

Morning at the country park — playground, ponds, an easy trail, café elevenses. Drive the ten minutes to South Stack for puffin-spotting in Ellin’s Tower (free, telescopes provided, wow guaranteed in season). Lunch and the afternoon at Trearddur Bay: sandcastles, rockpools, a Sea Shanty ice cream. Chips on Newry Beach watching the ferry sail at dusk closes the show. Total driving: under thirty minutes. Total arguments: statistically fewer than average.
